The pick would be available with the trade merchants around your chosen trainer.  As soon as your training period is over and you are ready, look at the task bar for the 'find minerals' button and BINGO – you will be able to see all the mineral veins available to you.

In order to get the most out of your World of Warcraft gold mining skills, you would need to be diligent in finding the right vein which would usually be around established mines and popular quest sites.  There is a wide choice of ore for your mining skills – choose from among thorium, steel, indrium, tin, copper, bloodstone, gold, dark iron, rich thorium, etc.

As you find out about the different ore, you would be able to learn a lot about them including method to make your own alloys and their value in the Auction House. You will out about ways to mix copper and tin  to produce bronze; you will learn that coal and iron makes steel, and so on. After all you are in the game to accumulate as much gold as possible. You should go and collect all you can while mining because everything has its own value – for example the greatest gems are valuable in direct gold however the lesser valuable bloodstones would be priceless for quests.

You will find that each mining site has three components which you could exploit – (1) metals and this is the most common of all; (2) gems which is the most precious of all (you would need hem for exchange and for making certain valuable recipes) and lastly (3) stones – these are use by the blacksmiths and engineers in the forgery.

In the end – a word of advice – you will find many miners in your area and you when you do, you would be faced with two choices – (1) to fight and take it all or (2) give the other miner a node and share the booty with the other miner and take turns. It is a great win-win situation for both and quite profitable as well.
