The first thing that you must do is to create an alternate character that will handle your mail and all your AH transactions. Now to really take advantage of the Auction House, you can decide to buy and sell items during weekends when there are more level 40 & up characters that have more money to burn. This way you have a better chance of selling an item for more money. 

Just like a true businessman, the secret to earn good money from auctions is to have good foresight. Stocking up on items that will potentially be in-demand when an incident happens can earn you good margins.

Another thing that will pay off for you in the end is patience in the game. Patience is important if you want to get a good deal on items that are being sold.  Do not buy over-priced items unless it is absolutely necessary. The same goes for selling items, do not sell your item to the first bidder, especially if you know that your item can be potentially valuable. This is why items are sold in the Auction House, so you can get the best deal for your items.

You can also use and auctioneer mod that will help you scan good bargains that you can earn healthy profits from. 

One more thing you would want to do is to treat all your sellers and buyers nicely.  You don’t know when this individual might need something that you have. You want transactions to end nicely so that you can begin to earn a good reputation in the servers.
